I was quite taken with the bright red berries of the hawthorn tree I saw on a recent bike ride. But in the studio as I was painting I really liked the look of the enormous Boston fern recently returned from its summer living in the backyard. So that is how we ended up with this painting with the foreground branches in quite cool autumnal New England tones of teal and red and the nearly tropical ferns and leaves behind.
